Take some time today to stop and think about where your food comes from and all the hard work that goes into growing it and getting it to your plate! Farmers are not only feeding you but are putting the clothes on your back. You’d be surprised what items are made from products grown or raised by farmers.
So remember to thank a farmer and celebrate ag!
This is a video of Pete Holmes comedic act that aired on November 4th.
The idea of daylight savings time was first introduced by Benjamin Franklin in 1784. As you know electricity wasn’t exactly widespread, so this was an idea to not waste daylight and get the most out of the hours that were light. Therefore the clocks would need to be set back/forth depending on the season. Sure, these days farmers probably get the most of this extra hour, because you know it takes all 6 of us longer than 20 minutes to get our daily work done. And all for that darn wheat, because it’s not important AT ALL. I love being portrayed as a uneducated, slow, hillbilly, don’t you? And damn straight we control the food. He’s a novel idea; only eat what you grow & take care of. Thanks. 8 hour work days for farmers? LOL, no. I’ll take my rural paradise over your city life ANY DAY.
And seriously, who is the writer for this show? Barely anything they said was factual. They should probably be fired, for incompetency.
I know this is a comedy and it’s just for fun. But it’s not funny, it’s not right. And even though it angered me, it more so made me sad. This is how people portray farmers. This is what they’re teaching their children; to not appreciate and to mock the very people that feed them and fuel their vehicles.
I bet you didn’t know that my little farm town is actually famous. In the summer of 1983 Hollywood invaded the little town of Readlyn, IA to film most of the movie Country. The movie portrays the struggles farmers faced during the farm crisis of the 1980s. It was filmed in other surrounding small towns, but the majority was done in Readlyn. At the bank, the co-op, the city hall, and the bar. They couldn’t have picked a better town to depict farmers across the nation. The movie would be released to the public in October 1984. Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard starred in the film. We’re also known for being the town of ‘857 people and One Old Grump’. We celebrate Grump Days each summer and someone is named the town grump. But that’s a story for another day! 🙂
“In this country, when the land is your life…you fight for your life.”
Amidst the Panera Bread and Chipolte controversy over antibiotic use, McDonald’s gets it. Scattered across the state of Iowa you’ll find giant billboards from McDonald’s with a thank you to farmers on it.
Alongside I-80 between Cedar Rapids and Des Moines you’ll also find a barn painted with the same thank you message. I didn’t stop to take a picture because we didn’t have the time but I assumed I could find a picture and more information online but I couldn’t! So that sucks. It’s awesome to see this display of thanks after all of the negative publicity lately. Remember farmers feed America. #thankafarmer
Thank YOU McDonald’s for getting it and appreciating all of the hard work farmers do.
